EIGHTH BATTERY.
Wounded—Serg. Jas. B. Gemmel, William ...y, Rudolph Smith, Oran B. Maynard, Wm. ..., Darius Hadley.
We are indebted to a friend for a copy of the Yorktown (Va.) Cavalier of May 28th--a—good looking and lively newspaper, printed by S. C. Hough and T. C. Fell. The editor is J. Hiram Champion, First Lieutenant of the 8th Independent N. Y. Battery.

ARMY CORRESPONDENCE.
CAMP OF 8TH INDEPENDENT N. Y.
BATTERY, YORKTOWN, Va., Sept. 2.
Mr. Mirror--Thinking that you would wish to hear from the Battery, I pen these lines. To be brief, we left camp on Gloucester Point, on the 28th ultimo. We were ordered to this side to relieve a Battery from Wisconsin, who had his reported 17 men for duty; and no wonder, for the foul state of the fort and of their quarters, was sufficient to put any Company in the same condition. Since we came in their place, some of the boys have been sick; but the cool weather has set in, and is likely to continue. The Company some time ago, raised about $140 for an independent band of six pieces. They came day before yesterday, and the musicians are now practicing; their maiden effort in that line, I should judge. Deserters from Richmond sometimes come within our lines here. The other day 12 came in and took the oath to support Uncle Sam.
Everything is quiet and monotonous in this place. Lieut. P. Morton has gone to Williamsburgh, to take temporary command of a battery.
I remain yours, &c., W. R. D.
