Eight day furlough granted Joseph Shaw on February 17, 1862.  Written by Captain John M. Cooney Co. F 38 NY Inf. and approved by  Lt. Col. James C. Strong (later promoted Colonel).

To whom it may concern

The bearer here of Joseph E. Shaw a private in Captain McQuaide’s Company, 38th Regiment of New York Volunteers, aged 19 years, 5 feet 9 inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, light hair and by profession a painter, born in the State of New York and enlisted at New York in the State of New York on the 11th day of May eighteen hundred and sixty one, to serve for the period of two years is hereby permitted to go to Carmel in the county of Putnam State of New York he having received a furlough from the 17 day of Feb to the 23 day of February at which period he will rejoin his company or Regiment at Camp Scott near Alexandria or wherever it may be, or be considered a deserter.

            Substance has been furnished to said Joseph E. Shaw to the 17 day of February and pay to the 31 day of December both inclusive.  Given under my hand at Camp Scott this 15th day of February 1862.

The applicant is a remarkably deserving steady & faithful young man and desires a short leave to go home and visit with a dying brother who has begged that he may be permitted to see him before he dies.  I would earnestly recommend that the furlough be granted.
