The New York State Battle Flag Collection includes one flag attributed to the 11th Regiment Cavalry, New York Volunteers. The silk standard seen here features the Arms of the United States embroidered in the center, complete with war clouds between the wings, and the unit's unofficial designation, "SCOTT'S 900 U.S.," embroidered on the lower ribbon. The name honors Assistant Secretary of War Thomas A. Scott who authoritized Colonel James B. Swain in October 1861 to organize a United States volunteer cavalry regiment. The regiment received the state designation, 11th Regiment Cavalry, New York Volunteers, in February 1864. (2006.0309)
