Reportedly first unfurled in October 1864 at Fort McGilvery near Petersburg, Virginia, this national color accompanied the 61st Regiment New York Volunteers during the Siege of Petersburg, June 15, 1864-April 2, 1865, and during the climatic Appomattox Campaign, March 28-April 9, 1865. Four men from the color guard are believed to have received wounds, two mortally, during the campaigns.
