When their three year term expired, those entitled were discharged and the regiment continued in service as “Veteran Volunteers,” as indicated by the "N.Y.S.V.V.” along the top of this blue silk regimental color. The 51st Regiment received this flag from the City of New York. The flag's obverse features the Arms of the State of New York with a presentation inscription on the lower ribbon. The reverse includes the Arms of the City of New York with the same presentation inscription. The inscriptions and Arms are painted.
