The NYS Battle Flag Collection includes two silk swallowtail guidons carried by the 179th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry. Each guidon, manufactured by Evans and Hassall of Philadelphia, conforms to the “stars and stripes” pattern prescribed in General Order No. 4, dated January 18, 1862. Also, each guidon includes the regiment's designation painted on the lower stripes. Several painted stars in the typical, concentric circles pattern appear in each canton. Most likely each flag included 35 stars. The guidons do have losses, most notably along the fly and canton. State Parks textile conservators discovered two pieces of black, silk crepe during treatment of one of the guidons.
