The New York State Battle Flag Collection includes two printed wool camp colors carried by the 128th Regiment NY Volunteer Infantry. Each camp color, manufactured by James Toft of New York City, is in the U.S. national pattern as prescribed in General Order No. 4, Headquarters of the U.S. Army, dated 18 January 1862. Each flag includes 35 white stars in 5 horizontal rows and “128” appliquéd in dark wool fabric. After the regiment received the flags, someone added the "128" unit designation. One flag includes "128" on the front or obverse, while the other flag includes "128" on the back or reverse. When originally constructed, the wool was rolled along the hoist edge and stitched to form a staff sleeve. The staff sleeve on each camp color seen here is no longer stitched to form a sleeve. The fly measurements include the open sleeve.
