12th Regiment Cavalry, NY Volunteers | National Flag | Civil War

Flag dimensions: 40 1/2" hoist X 48 1/2" fly.

(2003.0113)

This silk flag, pieced together with red and white stripes and one blue piece for the canton includes only 27 embroidered stars from either a 34 or 35 star pattern. The regiment’s official designation, “12th N.Y. Cavalry” is embroidered on the 4th red stripe while the regiment’s nickname, “3rd Ira Harris Guard,” is embroidered just below. In 1962, this flag was sewn between two layers of nylon netting, matching the colors of the flag with different colors of net. The lighter areas of netting show areas of loss in the original flag.
