Information taken from Margaret M. McMahon, With Rifle and Shovel: The 51st Pioneer Infantry Regiment in WW1, 2018.

The 51st Pioneer Infantry was organized at Camp Wadsworth, South Carolina, in January 1918. It departed for Europe in July, first traveling to Hoboken, New Jersey, and sailed for Brest, France aboard the USS Kroonland, arriving on August 8.

The 51st Pioneer Infantry was placed under the operational control of the 32nd French Corps on August 19, a part of the First Army. It participated in the St. Mihiel Offensive between September 12 and 16, and at the Toul Sector from September 17 to November 11. During the St. Mihiel Offensive, the First Battalion was attached to 301st Engineers in IV Corps, and the Second Battalion was attached to the 315th Engineers in VI Corps. On September 20, the Second Battalion joined the 301st Engineers.

After the armistice, the 51st Pioneer Infantry marched through Lorraine, France, then Luxembourg, to Germany where they helped occupy Cochem. In this time, the regiment published a newspaper titled, “The 51st Pioneers, Germany’s Greatest Newspaper.” (McMahon, 53).
