Constructed in 1986, design by Leibowitz/Bodouva and Associates, NYC. The Armory started design as a replacement for the Signal Battalion's armory in Yonkers, plus a joint venture with Westchester County as a Public Safety (Training) Building, on an 8 Acre site at Westchester County's "Grasslands" Complex. However, a new site and project to replace the Yonkers Armory on an adjacent site changed the plans. The armory portion of the facility is 55,097 Net Square Feet, with an adjacent Organizational Maintenance Shop of 6,696 Net Square Feet. The armory was initially occupied by the 42nd Chemical, 42nd MP, and 42nd Provost Marshal.
In the late 1980's and early 1990's the 42nd Division was reduced and eventually became the remaining division of three in the North East. These reductions caused the loss of the units stationed here. The 42nd MP was reflagged as the 442 MP Company, and a Signal unit was relocated from Yonkers. In 1994/95, further losses of force structure, which included the 101st Signal Battalion, and reductions in the State budget, forced DMNA to close many armories. Plans were made to transfer the facility to the County who owned the land and had a twenty year reversion clause in the original deed. The remaining unit was relocated to Orangeburg.
In 1997-98, with stabilization of the force structure and improvements in state funds, NYARNG troops reoccupied the facility. In December 1997, Headquarters 53rd Troop Command became the new tennants after relocating from Camp Smith.
